Like many teenagers, Jim Carson doesn't get along with his parents, feels neglected at home, and finds it hard to connect with classmates and teachers at school. Devising a half-baked plan, he flees his Florida home in the middle of the night for what he hopes will be a new start on the West Coast. What he encounters along the way is life changing, but not in the way he had hoped. Based on a true story, Runaway A Tragedy of Youth takes an unflinching view of what can happen when impulse overcomes prudence, when a split-second decision can pull a life off its rails.

To the author - Thank you for writing this book; I was amazed to stumble upon it. I could not put it down and read it in one sitting. I went to high school with "Jim." I wondered whatever happened to the case after nearly 40 years, Googled his name, saw your name tied to the case and that you had written a book about it. We had English class together 1977-78 right before this happened. I probably never would have thought of him again if I hadn't gotten the paper on my driveway one morning right after school let out for summer, and saw the front page story about his arrest. It was a huge shock in our small town. Though he and I were not friends, I recall he seemed friendly in class, a bit of a class clown. On the day we had to give oral book reports, I was extremely nervous and he in contrast appeared confident and charismatic in front of the class, so I admired him for that. I always wondered what led him on the path to those tragic crimes in Louisiana. I was angered by the coldness and heartlessness of it, yet I was intrigued because it didn’t seem to add up with the “kid” I remembered from class. Now, with the passing of time and having read your book, I think understand. My heart breaks. Coincidentally I am married to a criminal defense attorney, so your story resonated with me on many levels. Thank you. I'm glad your paths crossed at that point in his life -- he needed someone like you. I hope he will have another chance at freedom at some point.Product details

Runaway A Tragedy of Youth eBook Peter Alpert Reviews
A poignant and thought-provoking story that grips the reader from the beginning. Mr. Alpert's descriptive writing style draws you in immediately and makes this a compelling read from start to finish. Keep writing, Mr. Alpert, and we'll keep reading!
This is a worthy read.
A beautifully written book. I enjoyed it immensely. This book reinforces how a families bond is so important. When that bond breaks or frays, an unimaginable tragedy can occur. A tragedy that changed a young man’s life for every. I'm looking forward to more books from the author.
Peter's emotionally understated writing style strongly connected with my senses. It allowed me to have a deeper understanding of this tragic and complicated social issue. I highly recommend it.... especially for parents of young children.
Very enjoyable and quick read -- suspenseful but not overly dramatic. Unfortunately, the young man's future was pretty clear once the protagonist entered his life. I appreciate the perspective of the novel and that the reader is able to re-visit Jim in the future -- years after committing the crime. Amazing first work and I look forward to future releases from Mr Alpert.
I enjoyed Mr Alpert's first book very much. It kept my attention and even though it was obvious what the outcome would be, it held my attention and made me eager to read the final outcome. My one criticism would be Mr Alpert's use of the English language. At times I found his choice of words to be a little pedantic, but overall Mr Alpert keeps the reader engrossed to find out the final disposition of what is a serious problem in American society.
Once I started reading it was very hard to put down and I found I was staying up late and reading in the middle of the day to stay involved with what was happening next. The plot and explanation were well thought out and it keeps your interest from the very beginning. I found myself going back to the beginning several times to make sure I hadn't missed some important parts of the story. Peter has a great background and I found it very interesting to see his insight into what appeared at first to be a very straight forward situation. It was not and held my interest even more. I look forward to seeing other writings by this author. I am pleased to give it a 5 star rating.
