Jessie Whelan has always been a good liar, trying to protect her independence and her career as a teacher. But she risks everything when, after years of discreet loneliness, she embarks on a love affair. In the meantime, her secret past draws ever closer.
Ruth Sutton's powerful novel is the first part of a trilogy set in the north-west corner of England, 'Between the Mountains and the Sea'. She creates an intimate picture of interconnected lives in Cumbria in the early twentieth century.

It is not often that someone over age 60 has a first novel published, but this story can only be told by someone who has lived a full life and understands both the temptations of youth along with aging. The story is set in post WWI England at a time of change. There is some predictability in the story and surprises, and I found myself reading past bed time. Some of the characters are a delight, especially Hannah and Fred. I will not say more and let you discover them.
Sutton uses the local drawl of the locals in some sections, but after a few pages I was able to decipher the words.
Personal note: Ruth Sutton was an exchange teacher in the US in the mid-1970s, and we taught together. I have not had contact with her since that time and only discovered her novel on the web.

A Good Liar Between the Mountains and the Sea Book 1 edition by Ruth Sutton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this book a lot. It takes place in the Western Lake District of England, a beautiful area. Just a few weeks ago, the author herself, showed us around. The time setting is 1937. The descriptions of traveling, heating homes, local customs, and morals were vivid. The characters were well developed. As the plot developed, both the main character's emotions and mine went up and down. A Good Liar is complete in itself, yet I am looking forward to the next installment of the trilogy.
